Web directories are not what some internet marketers would prefer to use if only they were given a choice but, without a doubt, using web directories is a sure-fire way of driving traffic to your website.
These directories are an effective way of building PR (page rank) that helps websites get good rankings in the search engines. All search engines use page rank to grade the results based on the searches that visitors are making. Having a higher PR is having a better listing compared to others.

PR is based on the back-links that you have and the quality of those links. So it follows that the more back-links you have the higher your PR will be. You will also get better search engine placement.

This is the essence behind using web directories and linking. Once this combination has worked successfully you can expect an increase in your website traffic. To get a list of web directories all you have to do is type in the keyword in a search engine and choose from among the number of lists given.

Having good content is important in getting genuine back-links.

There are two effective ways of doing this:

First is the use of media or downloads. It is a fact that the majority of website visitors are very much inclined toward free downloads and media. You may notice that once you have created a number of these on your site the number of visitors you are getting has doubled. People are much more likely to come back to check for updates to the media that you have on your site.

The second method is article writing. The good thing about articles is that you can post them to as many sites as possible as long as their theme is related to yours. This way, you can have your back-links spread all over the Internet through the resource box placed at the end of each article. With your articles posted on various sites you are able to reach more consumers than you normally would if your article were only posted on your site.

Search engines LOVE well-written articles. Provide them with quality content and you are sure to have your articles picked up by these engines.

Going to forums or discussion pages.

This is a way of getting your message out while also generating website traffic. Just like web directories, you can type in the keywords on the search engines to get a list of forums you can join.

You may have noticed that some people post questions on forums. If you find that they are somehow related to your topic or business feel free to answer the query being asked.

Always be certain to include a 'signature' where you can add a short description and URL to your website. If you post regularly to these forums you can also change your signature to reflect the changes happening on your website.

If you maintain your posts on a regular basis you can have a steady flow of website traffic.

These are just some of the many ways you can drive traffic to your website. There will always be new and easier ways of doing this. For now, these are the ones being widely used. They also have proven their usefulness in the online marketing world. Use these strategies to maintain your website traffic.
